Portable super-telephoto power - Versatile 70–300mm focal length

A phenomenal second lens that picks up where your 18-55mm lens leaves off. It's lightweight and compact, yet includes a powerful zoom, helping bring even the most distant subjects into focus. With it, you'll be able to capture stunning close-ups of sports, concerts, wildlife, school events and much more.

Outstanding Nikon image quality

This lens features the superb optics and advanced technology used on Nikon's high-end lenses, letting you unleash the potential of your camera's high-resolution sensor. Your photos and videos will deliver rich and vibrant colors, deep contrast, minimal distortion plus beautiful soft backgrounds, even in less-than-ideal conditions. Just what you'd expect from Nikon.

Sharp photos, steady videos - Nikon's Vibration Reduction¹ VR image stabilization

Keeps photos sharp and videos steady during handheld shooting, while also enhancing your camera's low-light capabilities, so you can shoot at slower shutter speeds in dim lighting. Switch between Auto Focus and Manual Focus or turn VR on and off using the camera menu². With no switches on the lens barrel, there's no opportunity for the accidental unwanted changeing of settings when you want to take the shot.

¹ Based on CIPA Standard. This value is achieved when DX-format compatible lenses are attached to a DX-format digital SLR camera and zoom lenses are set at the maximum telephoto position.

² The lens will default to VR on when attached to models released prior to the D3400: D3300, D5500, D5300, D5200, D7200, D7100. These cameras will also require a firmware upgrade to access the menu to turn off the VR.

Smooth, fast autofocus

This quality lens uses a pulse motor (utilizing stepping motors) that focuses exceptionally fast and is nearly silent. It instantly brings subjects into focus with absolute precision. When captuing video, it smoothly shifts focus from subject to subject with virtually no drive noise.

*Note: camera compatibility is addressed in the Specifications section below.

Features

  • ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass - An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations
  • M/A - Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder
  • Super Integrated Coating - Nikon Super Integrated Coating is Nikon's term for its multilayer coating of the optical elements in NIKKOR lenses
  • Vibration Reduction - A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel
  • Pulse Motor - Nikon's "P" series of NIKKOR lenses use a pulse motor (utilizing stepping motors) to focus smoother and quieter than previous drive systems. This quiet drive system makes the lenses ideal for use when shooting video
