This model, the VariCamHS (SKU: AU-V23HS1G) is the camera head module only that comes with a B4 mount. With this modular design, the camera head docks to the recorder without any cable connection. The rugged docking mechanism allows easy docking and undocking in the field, without having to use a screwdriver. The camera head and recorder can also be positioned at separate locations and connected with a cable. This lets you mount only the camera head to a crane, thus adding flexibility to your camera work.

Drawing on the traditions and concept of the original VariCam line, VariCam HS helps its users capture action with its 2/3 3MOS and bayonet lens mount, continuous 240fps recording, and also revolutionizes workflow with the addition of dual-codec recording, in-camera color grading, and a modular design. The camera is rugged and designed for flexible setup and operation. In addition, the double-recorder and dual-codec recording function allows simultaneous recording of master and dailies for offline editing and previewing. This streamlines the production process and allows easy linking with network media, revolutionizing conventional moviemaking styles and ushering in next-generation workflows.

The VariCam HS can be fitted with a variety of accessories such as lens control system offered by 3rd parties, without the need of adaptor. The top and bottom panels are flat so various plates can be easily mounted as well as the handle with mounting holes. With its optional shoulder mount module (AU-VSHL1G), The VariCam HS can also be used as a shoulder-mount camera recorder. It is adjustable in a range of 110 mm in the front and back direction to accommodate a diversity of lenses.

• 2/3-type 2.2-Megapixel 3MOS Sensor: Developed specially for this model, the sensor achieves high sensitivity, low noise and a wide dynamic range.
• 14 Stops of Latitude: The wide dynamic range assures accurate image rendering over the entire image area, from dark parts to highlights. Even in dimly lit scenes, which are particularly important in movie production, the VariCam HS provides low-noise images without any compromise in picture quality.
• The "VariCam Look" with Evolved Color Gamut and Dynamic Range: The gamma curve has evolved to "V-Log," further extending the dynamic range of the "F-REC" gamma curve, which was highly acclaimed in the original VariCam. It is capable of recording the 14 stops of dynamic range offered by the VariCam HS, and enhances grading flexibility.
• High Frame Rate Records at 240 fps: When using the AVC-Intra100 codec for recording, the frame rate can be set in the range of 1fps to 240 fps. Overcranking at the maximum speed of 10x provides a slow-motion effect of about 1/10 normal speed. The frame rate can be changed while recording, allowing smooth variation of the slow-motion effect within the same scene. When set to a low frame rate, undercranking (quick-motion effect) can be achieved.
• Optimized Internal Optical Filter: This high-precision internal optical filter was created by bonding an optical low-pass filter and IR glass and providing it with a UV/IR-cut coating (membrane). The low-pass filter eliminates aliasing and provides optimum resolution. The UV/IR-cut filter prevents ghosts and reddening in dark areas inside the camera. For frequently used ND filters, the compact body houses a rotary filter system with four filters (1/4ND, 1/16ND, 1/64ND, CLEAR) for easy switching.
