The Roland K-25m is a 25-key, velocity sensitive keyboard designed for use with the Roland Boutique series. Measuring less than 12" across, the K-25m acts as a dock for any Roland Boutique module, and once in place the module can be tilted at two different angles for easier viewing and sound programming, or can be laid completely flat. The compact keyboard can also address a range from -4 to +5 octaves when used with the relevant module, and is illuminated by glowing indicator strips.
Similar to the now well-established Korg Volca series and Yamaha's recent Reface synths, Roland has designed three new models (JU-06; JP-08; JX-03), all of which are battery-powered and tote a built-in speaker, each based on one of the company's classic synthesizers. The K-25m mini controller keyboard slots into a tilting dock-style cradle to create a portable, book-size synth, but it also happily functions as a desktop module controlled via MIDI.
All three models feature a built-in, 16-step sequencer and a pair of ribbon controllers, and are powered by Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology, which ensures that the essence of the synthesizer is recrated at every level - even the analog component level. The ribbons can control pitch, modulation and also provide the means to preview sound when no keyboard is attached. Each model has four-voice polyphony but you can chain two of each type together using the full-size MIDI in/out ports to create one 8-voice synth.
Audio input and output mini jack sockets are joined by a headphone out and a level control .USB port lets you power each module via USB (as opposed to battery power), allowing you to back up synth patches and sequences to a computer. It will even function as a 24-bgit/44.1kHz audio interface, so you can record these synths directly to your DAW.
