SoundField SPS422B-SYSTEM

The SoundField SPS422B microphone system consists of a mono and variable angle microphone and an AC powered 1U processor. The microphone contains four capsules, mounted in a tetrahedral array that allows it to become different kinds of microphones by varying individual capsule combinations. It can be a conventional mono omni, cardioid, hyper-cardioid, figure eight or anything in between. The error between capsules is resolved within the processor. You can simply point and shoot the microphone regardless of mode! Avoid lengthy set-up time typical of separate microphones and there is no phase cancellation when shifting between mono and stereo modes. Stereo imaging is rock stable and absolutely breathtaking.

The SoundField System relies upon B-Format and its processing at its core. The advantage of B-Format is that everything begins as a phase accurate representation of an acoustical event. Phase accurate means that all sound is recorded from the same central point. This is the core difference between SoundField and traditional stereo or multi-mike set-ups, in that all other methods (other than a single mono mike) capture audio from different points in space. From SoundField's "single point source", any type of output (omni, cardioid, hyper-cardioid or figure eight) in any form (mono, stereo, or extra wide stereo) can be derived. In addition, special output forms such as mid/side are just a push button away. This makes the SoundField SPS422B perhaps the most flexible microphone on the planet, and one that offers a long future.

• The SPS422B Microphone itself looks like a normal microphone, but with a larger "head" than normal (to hold the 4 capsule array). The narrow barrel incorporates a 12 pin output connector and a 20 metre 12 pin to 12 pin cable to connect the mic to its 1U processor is supplied as standard. The capsules are all hand made by SoundField, gold sputtered and built with the typical features of a high end large capsule condenser microphone. The SPS422B microphone itself is the same microphone found in the top of the line SoundField MKV, the only difference being the Processor. This is unique in that SoundField's stereo microphone compares sonically to many other more expensive stereo pairs or stereo mics. Nothing about the operational parameters are controllable at or within the microphone itself. All control features are located on the SPS422B Processor/Preamp. The concept is that the processor should remain within reach of the engineer in the control room, where pattern and stereo modes can be altered without disturbing talent or interrupting a session. This fact alone makes it unique in ease of use, as the engineer will find the SoundField SPS422B a joy to operate.
• A Mic Clip. A standard plastic "stand adapter" type mic clip is supplied with a 'double clamp' system to firmly hold the SPS422B Microphone which screws onto a conventional mic stand. A removable insert in the threading enables it to screw on to Euro style thread patterns or American style. Most people opt to purchase the optional shock mount to decouple the SPS422B from induced vibration.
• A 20 Metre SoundField cable with a 12 pin female and 12 pin male connector is included (about 55 feet long) to connect the microphone to its 1U processor. These cables can also be used as extension cables. It is a flexible 6 pair cable, which is a similar diameter to standard mic cable and manufactured for SoundField by the Belden Cable Co.
• A SPS422B 1U Electronics Processor/Preamp accomplishes all the capsule compensation, math and matrix operations to make it extremely easy to operate the SoundField Array. The system operates just as a coincident pair would but with a single set of controls. Inside the processor are extremely high performance microphone preamplifiers, delivering pro line level (+4) output to make it easy to interface to just about anything with XLR connectors.
