Glyph has expanded upon their FireWire 400 PortaGig and upgraded it with two FireWire 800 ports, a fast internal SATA II drive, Oxford 934 chip, and a rear power switch. The small bus-powered hard drive weighs less than 10 ounces, but is powerful enough to support high track-count audio sessions, and has been tested and approved with Digidesign Pro Tools. Designed with a fanless aluminum enclosure, the PortaGig can run on its included power supply if bus power is not available or insufficient. The warranty has also been upgraded to three years and includes coverage under Glyph's Overnight Advance Replacement policy.
The 7,200 RPM drives have slightly higher performance than the 5,400 RPM models. The 7,200 RPM models also have slightly higher track count compared to the 5,400 RPM models due to their higher transfer rates. The 5,400 RPM models have higher storage capacities (of up to 250 GB) than the 7,200 RPM models (only up to 200 GB).
The PortaGig 800 can be run successfully using FireWire and/or USB bus power supplied by many notebook computers, however Glyph can't guarantee compatibility with all notebooks due to differing bus power specs. If you want to guarantee that the PortaGig will work, make sure you purchase or include the correct DC power supply in your purchase of the PortaGig.
