Microtech Gefell's UMT 800 is a large format studio microphone featuring a large diameter pickup capsule.  A choice of 5 polar patterns insures superior performance for professional recording in the studio and on location.  The UMT800 produces a clean, colorless sound that is well suited for accurate recording of instrumental and vocal soloists in music studios, motion picture scoring stages, and television broadcast studios.  The microphone is distinguished by its high sensitivity and outstanding signal to noise ratio.

The pickup capsule is a pressure gradient transducer using dual membranes and a single brass back plate.  The large diameter plastic membranes are gold sputtered.  Varying the polarization voltage to the membranes with the pattern switch located on the bottom of the microphone produces 5 patterns: omni, wide cardioid, cardioid, hyper-cardioid and figure 8.  The direction of maximum sensitivity is radial to the head grill, i.e. side addressed.  The microphone amplifier is a transformerless design with a symmetrical output stage.  This design yields a wide dynamic range and a low self noise floor.  The sensitivity can be reduced by 10dB switch when miking extremely loud sound sources.  A low frequency roll-off switch, also mounted on the body of the mike, reduces proximity effect when close miking.  The microphone's output is via a 3-pin XLR connector at the base.  Phantom powering must be supplied by an external source of 48 volts conforming to the international standards DIN 45596 and IEC 268-15.
