For keyboardists and composers especially, the Seaboard RISE from ROLI is a dream come true in terms of expressive ability from an easy-to-use MIDI controller. Bundled with Equator, which is made specifically for real-time modulation, the Seaboard RISE becomes downright futuristic, with the ability to faithfully and convincingly emulate otherwise inimitable sounds via MIDI – such as John Coltrane's spiritual saxophone licks, electric slide guitar and even the reedy quiver of Ron Burgundy's jazz flute solos in Anchorman. Explore a vast range of sounds through Equator, the Seaboard’s custom-built software synthesizer that's designed exclusively for instruments with Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression (MPE) and allows users to design multidimensional sounds.

An XY Touch Pad gives you control of two separate parameters in a single gesture, on a per-note basis. When you press the pad, the X and Y positions are sent as MIDI CC messages that can be assigned to any parameter in Equator or other synth. For instance, you could assign the X position to filter cutoff and the Y position to LFO speed. In short, this allows you to shape the notes as you play them through RISE's five "dimensions of touch". Those five dimensions of touch – Strike, Glide for pitch bend, Slide for modulation, Press for continuous touch and Lift – are easily mapped and can be controlled directly from its unique MIDI-assignable touch faders, which adjust expression sensitivity.

You don't need to be an expert keyboardist to unlock the added benefits of those dimensions; for one thing, the keys of the Seaboard RISE are designed to let performers and composers dig into the keys rhythmically. For instance, the unit's pitch ribbons are thinner than the keywaves so you can perform smooth glissandos. You can easily shift octaves by holding down the central button on the SoundDial for a second – until the light spreads slightly – and rotating the dial. Start in Piano mode and then explore new dimensions of touch interaction. Customize sensitivity to match your own playing style, or create new sonic possibilities by mapping sound parameters to unique gestures.

Compatible with a variety of software and hardware synthesizers - as well as third-party DAWs across OS X, Windows and other platforms – Equator allows unprecedented expressiveness as well as connectivity to a range of music hardware and software, and ships with hundreds of presets. The ROLI Dashboard updates RISE firmware and bundled software including Equator. It also lets users control global expression parameters, configure MIDI settings, manage Bluetooth identity, and set energy savings controls.

The Seaboard RISE has two modes you can toggle back and forth from, by pressing the Power/Mode button at the bottom left of the keywave surface. The buttons' central light indicates the mode you're currently using. In MIDI mode (white LED), the touch faders and XY Pad behave as controllers. In Expression mode (cyan LED), the 3 touch faders adjust the RISE's sensitivity to Pitch Glide, Slide and Press. Expression curves serve as graphical curves that represent the five dimensions of touch, whereas Visualiser uses the Dashboard software to view how the dimensions are acting on the Keywave surface.

Seaboard RISE has one pedal input – it can be set to behave as a sustain or expression pedal using the ROLI Dashboard software, where you can also select the MIDI CC which is transmitted by the pedal. Users will likely get a quicker, more instantaneous gratification from using the RISE in live settings versus studio sessions, although with a bit of programming studio users can get the sound manipulation(s) they seek and rapidly build upon them.
