Roland's M-5000 is the first embodiment of Open High Resolution Configurable Architecture (O.H.R.C.A.), a a powerful new concept in audio console technology that's designed to quickly adapt and excel in any mixing application including traditional FOH, monitor mix position, broadcast and theater. Using these core O.H.R.C. philosophies, the Roland M-5000 allows for freely assignable audio paths, support for multiple current and future digital audio protocols and native 96 kHz audio quality throughout the system.  The M-5000 delivers liberating user definable workflows that make operation fast, accurate and friendly.

Stunning Design
The M-5000 has an uncluttered and approachable user interface that was designed to make anyone familiar with a specific digital console workflow feel immediately comfortable mixing on it.  Gone are awkward graphical recreations of analog controls. The M-5000 graphical interface uses a fresh, digital and decidedly futuristic design that supports the advanced technology of O.H.R.C.A.

Configurable Architecture
The Roland M-5000’s internal input and mix buss configuration is not fixed and can be freely defined for input channels, AUX busses, Matrices, subgroup busses, MIX-MINUS busses and Main output busses. A total of 128 audio paths with full audio DSP processing are available allowing user to create a console structure to suit the needs of any application.

A monitor engineer can choose to add more aux busses for monitor mixes, broadcasters can add matrices, mix minus busses and 5.1 surround outputs and houses of worship can reconfigure the M-5000 to handle the larger input counts of special services around the holidays.  A whole new level of freedom and flexibility is now possible.

Open
The M-5000 has two built-in REAC ports and a built-in digital split port (also able to be used as a redundant REAC connection) that support all 25 currently available REAC products and allow a total of 80 external inputs and 80 external outputs by REAC. In addition, two 80 x 80 audio channel (at 96 kHz) expansion card slots for XI-Series expansion cards are available that include XI-Dante, XI-MADI, XI-Waves SoundGrid, or additional REAC ports with the XI-REAC expansion cards. By having two high-channel count slots, the M-5000 can support multiple expansion types at the same time. This expansion capability also allows for future-proofing through the development of XI-Series expansion cards to support additional formats in the future.

Local connections on the rear of the M-5000 include 16x16 XLR analog I/O, 4x4 AES/EBU, a 16x16 ASIO USB audio interface, an iPad direct cable connection and direct USB wireless connection, along with control ports including footswitches, GP I/O, RS-232C and MIDI. All of this connectivity enables simultaneous access to up to 300 inputs and 296 outputs, all at 96kHz and even more at 48kHz.

High Resolution
Pure and transparent 96 kHz audio processing is combined with world-class mic pre’s both local to the console as well as included in Roland’s extensive digital snake lineup to ensure the highest quality of sound from end to end.  Input and output processing includes an advanced 4-band PEQ, two assignable dynamics processors, delay adjustable in milliseconds, units of distance or video frame rates as well as two insert point per channel for direct patching or internal or external effect processors. 8 stereo or dual mono multi-effect processors are included and feature classic Roland vintage and famous Boss compact pedal modeling. An incredible 32, 31-band Graphic EQs are also included that can be grouped together and also be changed to an 8-band Parametric EQ.  Waves Sound grid effects can also be used via the optional XI-Waves expansion card.

Finally, several main buss configurations are available including LR, LR + Mono, LCR, Cross-Matrixes LCR, Dual LR and 5.1 surround with fully adjustable downmix control to stereo mix.

Workflow
The heart of O.H.R.C.A is a flexible workflow, and the M-5000 can be configured and customized to the operator’s preferred workflow. The 28 channel faders are organized into four groups, three groups of 8 faders that can work together or be isolated to remain focused on a group of inputs or outputs along with 4 dedicated and fully assignable faders that are always available regardless of what is selected on the other 24 faders. The fader workflow allows multiple ways to rapidly access input and output channels including scrolling, DCA spills to access channels assigned to a DCA, the ability to set anchor channels to instantly jump to pre-selected “anchor points” as well as 3 fully assignable user layers that allow the assignment of any combination of input, output or DCA faders in any order.

Placed strategically above the 4 dedicated faders is a user assignable section with 3 banks of 4 multi-function encoder knobs and 8 buttons, all supported by an OLED display that indicates the currently assigned function.  The operator can select and assign their most important parameters to the knobs and buttons for immediate access and control.

The large 12” high resolution touch screen is supported by 16 precision multi-function encoder knobs that instantly change to become the control parameters for whatever function is selected on the screen.  A dedicated touch and turn knob is also included that instantly maps to the selected parameter on the screen. Parameters can also be adjusted directly on the touch screen by touching and dragging the selected parameter.

Full functioning remote control software (Mac/Windows) extends the user interface beyond the built-in GUI resulting in flexible organization of critical pages or meters on external monitors of any size. An iPad rest and dedicated hardwired connection is also included to support an iPad running the M-5000 iPad application.

In the rapidly changing world of live sound, the ability to adapt on the fly to meet the needs of the application is sometimes the difference between a good show and a great show.
