Product Overview

Loaded with 10 Mackie Onyx preamps and 16 high-headroom/low-noise line inputs, the 1642VLZ4 delivers clear, crisp audio reproduction in a versatile, reliable, and portable package.

The 1642VLZ4 is a great board for budget and home studios. The eight mono channels feature a 3 band equalizer (EQ) with selectable midrange frequency for enhancing signals and correcting problems. The stereo channels provide 4-band fixed EQ with hi / low shelf EQs, and hi-mid / low-mid peak EQs. You get four full-featured auxiliary sends per channel that can be used to create separate headphone mixes, or when coupled with the stereo returns, to add whole mix compression. There are also unbalanced inserts on channels 1-8 so you can connect your favorite compressors, gates or effects units. Another studio friendly feature is the control room source matrix that lets you choose to listen to any of four different sources through the console's control room stereo outputs. If you have an 8 track recorder simply hook the direct outputs of channels 1-8 to the recorder inputs and you can track 8 channels at once. You could also use the 4 subgroup outputs (buses) and 4 Y-cables to send signals to the multitrack, then monitor those tracks on channels 5 thru 12 of the console. The 10 microphone input channels have phantom power so you can use condenser microphones. Built-in Low-cut filters on those channels help reduce low-frequency noise the more sensitive condensers often pick up.

With a rack-mountable design and rugged steel chassis built to handle load-ins and load-outs, the 1642 also shines in a live setting. For instance, having 4 buses means you could create submixes of the drums and background vocals allowing simple two fader control of both elements. The stereo return channels also come in handy for the effects and dynamics you need to create that polished mix. Sealed rotary controls make sure the unavoidable dirt, dust, and road grime won't affect your console.

The 1642 is engineered to provide a high degree of radio frequency (RF) rejection making it a good fit for broadcasting applications. So whether for the studio, live performance or both, the flexible Mackie 1642VLZ4 is a solid choice.
