The Audio-Technica AT5040 is not only their premier studio vocal microphone, it's also the debut of their flagship 50 Series of mics, and represents a milestone in condenser microphone design as well, offering remarkably musical high-fidelity performance, with profound realism and depth, presence and purity of sound. It has a cardioid polar pickup pattern and features an extremely smooth top end with controlled sibilance. Its large-diaphragm characteristics and fast transient response also make it great for recording acoustic instruments such as piano, guitar, strings and saxophone.

To achieve purity of sound, Audio-Technica engineers developed a 4-part rectangular element, the pinnacle of recent breakthroughs in sound-capture technology. Four exquisitely-matched ultra-thin diaphragms function together (with outputs proprietarily summed) as Audio-Technica’s single largest-ever element, with a combined surface area twice that of a standard one-inch circular diaphragm. The benefits of the 4 diaphragms combined in a single capsule are an extremely low noise floor—yet without increased weight, decreased transient response, or other drawbacks that typically restrict diaphragm size.

Every unit is hand-built and individually inspected for 100% quality control. Each studio mic is enclosed within an elegant aluminum and brass housing with high-quality gray finish for durability and low reflectivity.
